7 Tips for Painting Your Ceilings- Home Staging and Decorating Tips/PaintingDo you ever wonder what to do with the ceiling after you have painted the walls? Should you paint it the same color? Should you paint it white? How about a different color?Here are my tips for painting the perfect ceiling also known as the “fifth wall”.The ceiling should be painted with a flat finish paint unless you want a little drama with a reflective ceiling.If your wall color is a light color then you can paint the ceiling to match the walls. This is good for resale. What is a light color? Any color with a light reflective value (LRV) of 50 or higher. Sherwin Williams has the LRV listed for each of its colors so that’s pretty easy to figure out. It’s also less expensive to paint the ceiling the same color as the walls if you are working with a paint contractor.3. If the wall color has an LRV less than 50, select a paint color that is two shades lighter than the wall color, or select the lightest color on the paint strip. This is good for resale and it looks fabulous when the ceiling color blends with the wall color.4. I am not a fan of stark white ceilings. Let me repeat, I am not a fan of stark white ceilings especially if the wall color has an LRV of 50 or less. The stark white ceiling feels disjointed and out of place. There is an exception of course. If your house is contemporary in style then a white ceiling may be the right choice.5. I am not a fan of dark ceilings and dark walls, especially when the ceilings are only eight feet high. This creates a box or cave-like feeling appropriate for a hermit. This is not good for resale. This combination would be appropriate, however, for a media room.6. If you are not planning to sell anytime soon and you have very high ceilings, let’s say in an entry, you could do something dramatic like painting the ceiling black if the walls are light in color. Very dramatic!7. I break the rules sometimes when it comes to kids rooms and for clients who like color.
