Light Bright Living Room Design Concept Board

The most common request that I get is this, “I want to lighten and brighten my home.” If this sounds like your quest, a home with a sunnier disposition, then I have some tips for you.

The design concept board above includes furnishings to make a living room feel lighter and brighter. Let’s start with the wall color. Alabaster and Eider White from Sherwin Williams are two colors that keep the walls looking light without feeling sterile. These are great colors for bold artwork or neutral decor.

To keep a room feeling light, the wall color is not only important, the furniture style is also important. You can have dark colors and dark finishes but keep some space between the floor and the bottom of the furniture. Let the room breathe with “space.” I also selected tables that have an open feeling. They don’t obstruct the eye from traveling through and around them.

Tapered sofa legs and open occasional tables keep the room feeling light.

Mirrors reflect light so they are always a good choice. They can be made with antiqued glass or with panes or other details. They act like faux windows and reflect light back into the room. Install them in the area of the room that gets the least amount of light.

Large mirrors reflect the light on this side of the room that felt dark. Photographic art with color keeps the feeling cheerful.

A light colored rug will balance a dark floor and will blend with a light-colored floor. Color is still a good option if it is muted. Then select wall art with similar colors in the rug but go bold with richer colors so that the art takes center stage. Keep the eye drawn up!
